As a founding member of the Rhode Island Food Security Coalition, the Center works closely with local and national hunger relief agencies, food security organizations, government agencies and public and private sector service providers to address issues of hunger and food insecurity through innovative partnerships, involving students, faculty and staff. A few of the recent initiatives have included:

Community Nutrition Education The Center offers educational programming for community groups and audiences that are nutritionally at risk, such as seniors, low-income families and children. Culinary nutrition demonstrations and after school enrichment programs provide information about nutrition, the benefits of healthy food choices, the importance of physical activity and basic cooking skills.

Student Development The Center oversees a nonprofit education rotation for culinary, pastry, hotel and food service management students, which introduces students to food-related community issues and the opportunities to use their career skills to make a difference in the lives of those who are food insecure and nutritionally at risk.

Special Events and Projects The Center hosts and provides meals annually for the hungry at JWU’s Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Those in Need, the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless Memorial service, and various special dinners at local soup kitchens and shelters.

Veggin' Out An innovative collaboration between the Center, the Rhode Island Department of Health, WIC and local food distribution programs to increase produce consumption among low-income residents through culinary and nutrition education at farmers' markets, produce distribution sites and children's programs.
