Joshua Reflects on His Time at Orientation

Joshua Jaramillo ’26, a Culinary Arts major from New York, was one of many new students who walked through the doors of JWU full of anticipation and curiosity. Through his reflection on orientation, Joshua shares how it helped him feel right at home and how his experience set the stage for a memorable start at JWU.

What were you most excited or nervous about before arriving at orientation?

Before arriving, I was excited to finally step foot on campus and get a feel for what my next few years at JWU would be like. At the same time, I was a little nervous about meeting new people. Coming from New York, I knew I’d be surrounded by students from all over, and I wasn’t sure how quickly I’d find my place.

Do you remember your first moments on campus? What stood out to you when you first arrived?

I remember stepping onto campus and being greeted by orientation leaders who had so much energy. They made the atmosphere feel really welcoming. Seeing all the students checking in, meeting their groups and getting their name tags made everything feel real. That was the moment I thought, “Okay, this is actually happening — I’m starting college.”

How did orientation help you feel more connected to JWU?

Orientation was where I met some of my best friends — people I still talk to and hang out with today. Being in a group with other new students made it easy to start conversations, and the activities helped break the ice. We were all in the same boat, figuring out this new chapter together, which made it easier to bond. Looking back, I can’t imagine my JWU experience without the friendships that started at orientation.

What was your favorite part of orientation? Any memorable activities or events?

One of the most memorable parts was the icebreaker activities. At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about them, but they actually made it easier to start talking to people. I also really enjoyed the campus tours because they helped me get comfortable with where everything was.

Did you meet any friends or mentors during orientation? How did that happen?

Yeah! I met a few people in my orientation group that I still am very close with to this day. It’s funny because at first, we were all just kind of standing there, not really talking, but after a few activities we started bonding. One of the orientation leaders also shared their experience about getting involved on campus, which made me realize how important it is to put yourself out there.

Looking back, what was your biggest takeaway from orientation?

My biggest takeaway was that getting involved is key. Orientation showed me that the more you put yourself out there, the more you get out of the experience. Whether it’s joining a club, attending events, or just introducing yourself to new people, those small steps can make a big difference.

If you could give one piece of advice to an incoming student about orientation, what would it be?

Go in with an open mind. Even if you’re nervous or feel out of your comfort zone, just try to be present and take it all in. You never know who you’re going to meet or what opportunities will come your way, so take advantage of everything orientation has to offer.
